I support our federal workforce. I represent tens of thousands of federal employees and retirees in the First District. The federal workforce is full of dedicated and committed citizens who exemplify patriotism in everything they do. I believe it is important to support legislative measures that adequately address the specific needs of our hard-working federal employees and retirees. I do not believe that current retirees should see any changes to the retirement benefits that they have earned. This Congress, I fought to ensure federal received back pay for the time we were in a government shutdown. When OPM suggested changes to federal employee benefits, I wrote letters to the Administration and House Leadership opposing these changes. I also sponsored the Combat Zone Tax Parity Act, which would ensure that federal civilian employees working alongside our military in combat zones would receive the same tax treatment.
I am working to protect our community. I frequently speak with First District school teachers and principals, parents, and local law enforcement about what they need to keep our children safe. I have supported increased funding for school security grants and mental health programs and will continue to do so. With my support, Congress passed laws such as the STOP School Violence Act to help schools and law enforcement prevent, recognize and respond to warning signs of violence. In addition, the Fix NICS Act, now the law of the land, ensures that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) operations more adequately address background check demand and improve NICS performance – including enhancing system availability, determination rates, and E-Check services. I also support increased training and funding to increase collaboration among local, state and federal law enforcement, technology platforms, and education systems so that warning signs pointing towards violence can be caught and addressed much more quickly than is currently the case. This year, I supported the Project Safe Neighborhoods Grant Program Authorization Act, which establishes a grant program to provide resources to state and local entities to curb the rise in gang activity and violence. This will especially protect our area from violence from gangs like MS-13.
